Tribute in Amoretti 3
Painting: Audubon's Watercolors Octavo Pl. 9A, American Robin |
Standing before the open vestibule,
The ornamental etched glass window lost
in morning sun, watching a silent one
break quickly across the newly seeded lawn,
as bright green with thin blades rise as thrown sown
sharp-armed dragon’s teeth; screaming harbinger
of fatal spring. A robin listens
With a lightly pretended snap of shock.
Blood, rusty red, fills up his feathered shirt
when his frantic flurried chase dies, scattered
among white lilacs and black locust trees,
inattentive to her frozen waiting.
Some think that end comes from pretension,
but death in love comes from ones’s inattention
