About
Robin B. James grew up in a haunted house in Albion, Michigan. His formative years (1979-1995) were spent in Seattle and Olympia, Washington where he attended The Evergreen State College studying Motion Pcture Production. With Lorraine Tong he formed a small performance art ensemble, The Theater of Transformations. In 1979, they invented some creative picture collections, Imagination Decks, and then got involved in community radio at KAOS-FM. Robin volunteered at OP magazine where he began his work as a music journalist, and eventually edited a study of electronic folk arts, Cassette Mythos. He worked at Muzak as a Submasterer, then threw it all away for a supposedly more steady and lucrative career as a librarian, studying at the University of Washington Graduate School of Library and Information Science in Seattle. In 1992 he founded a small business, Indices Unlimited, creating information architectural solutions and navigation tools for collections of media files as well as crafting traditional back of the book indexing. He had a short career at Archive Impact! (the ! is part of the name) a consortium of librarians providing services for clients including as a film researcher at the General Motors Media Archive, and a video cataloger for National Geographic and Coca Cola. He had an even shorter career at the University of Michigan International Institute as a program assistant in the Center for World Performance Studies. After September 11, 2001 he spent years wandering in the wilderness of Michigan, Washington, Pennsylvania and Ohio, eventually serving as an assistant reference librarian at the Pottsville Free Public Library, and later as the library manager at the American Institute of Alternative Medicine. Now he is exploring a new career learning the fundamentals of promoting New Age Music at The B Company.
