Kitty and Rabbit show their friendship as gifts are exchanged.
Or forgotten?

Kitty and Rabbit Have Christmas

I was sleeping in my kitty perch atop the armoire and dreaming odd dreams about butterflies in the field and wishing I could fly like that… When I was awoken.

Broken from my dreams I awoke hazily to see Rabbit pushing on my kitty perch roughly.

“Ok! Ok! Rabbit I’m awake! What is it?”

She put both paws to her mouth and giggled, “It’s Christmas Kitty! Come down!”

You know what? Rabbit is always so happy. Are they always that way?  Bunnies?

Down the stairs and into the living room a mess of shiny Christmas paper and bows from opened gifts, the children had been here.

I met Rabbit at the base of the Christmas tree and she was smiling.

There was one last gift in shimmering green at the back of our tree.

“Go ahead, unwrap it.” She said.

So, I unwrapped it.

It was the most beautiful scratching post I’d ever seen.

Rabbit smiled “So? Do you like it?” She asked.

“Yes. Yes, I do Rabbit, where did you get it?”

“Well, I made it, I made it for you.”

“How did you Rabbit?”

She explained:

Out on her travels, she had noticed a fallen over pine tree, so she nibbled at the trunk until it was free. She dragged the stump back to our house and then to the basement.

Using our master’s power tools, she cut both ends off the stump clean using the table saw (always wearing eye protection of course.)

She took the stump and put it in the wood lathe and spun the wood, and she only used the ‘gouge’ to roughen the stump to a four-inch diameter. She knew a scratching post should be rough.  Her next step was simply to wood glue it to the circular plywood base (twelve inches in diameter she had cut earlier with the jig-saw) and four two-inch counter-sunk wood screws. The natural pine smelled so good, she didn’t lacquer.

And Tada! A homemade scratching post.

I tried it out, and it was indeed a good post to scratch on.

“Rabbit? Thanks, it’s the best Christmas present I ever got!” I hugged her.

Rabbit hugged me back and then looked at me, “So what did you get me?”

“Umm…”

“Could you wait for a sec? I have it in the next room…” I ran off as Rabbit smiled and said “Ok.”

I padded wildly up into masters room, Nothing! And then bounded down the hallway to mistress’s room, Lancôme, Dior, Chanel. Bunnies don’t wear perfume!

Panicking I ran down to the kitchen. I grabbed yesterday’s newspaper from the wastebasket and opened the fridge. There it was, I wrapped it up.

“Rabbit? Could you come in here?”

Rabbit came through the door and smiled at me.

“Here is your Christmas present.” And I placed it down on the floor…oomf!

She unwrapped the newspaper to find a big plump cabbage.

She jumped on me with her rabbit legs and kissed me “How did you know?”

I looked back at her and simply replied, “Because you’re my rabbit.”

And you know what?

I’ll bet there are millions and millions of rabbits out there.

But, I am sure I have the best one.

Merry Christmas from Kitty and Rabbit
