Lots of water under the bridge

I see it's been quite a while since I updated the news on my profile, seeing as how I've now become an octogenerian. The highlight of last year was July. I spent the whole month up in Idaho at a fellow author's horse ranch. She and her husband invited me up there. I had a real blast helping to take care of their 4 horses from grooming to riding.

Winter was, or I guess still is, hanging around but there is promise of a nice spring. I'm looking forward to returning to Idaho, this time along with my wife. Probably happen around late May or June. Last July, the temperatures were way over 100 degrees (F) and being out in the sun wasn't my preference. The only consolation was trips up into the mountains to cool off.

Last fall, a close friend of mine passed away suddenly of a heart attack. He was only 58. Known him for almost 30 years. He loved to go back to Colorado and elk/deer/grouse hunt with me. Going to miss him.

About

My first two novels, "You Only Love Twice" and "The Long Trek Home", are available on Amazon under B Douglas Slack. The Long Trek Home is intended to be the first book of a trilogy.

Fully retired now (at 82) and enjoying my leisure time by doing what I've always wanted to do - write.  I have a Wordpress account at Tom1950.wordpress.com.  I used to have a Facebook account, but they kept changing stuff around and I got disgusted with them so I quit..  Although I haven't done much on my Wordpress account, it does have a lot of my earlier works done up in blog style.  That blogging effort has now become "Life - Such as it Was".  The picture accompanying the autobiography is my picture from my 1957 Bitburg American High School, Germany yearbook "Contrails". I am married and have been for over 54 years.

I got to thinking about my experiences in Vietnam and wrote the story "The Gift of Life" in tribute to a couple of my friends. I spent 20 years in the service of my country and I'm damned proud of it.  In the '60's, I was looked on as something that crawled out from under a rock. But now, due to more enlightened public opinion, I wanted to do more than just talk about it.  In view of that, I display my "fruit salad", my medal bar, here for all to see.  It isn't bragging, it's simply pride in a job I did well.

If you're curious as to what they all mean, here you go (left to right & top to bottom):

Navy Unit Commendation (3 awards) : Meritorious Unit Commendation (3 awards)

Navy Good Conduct (4 awards @ 4 years each) : National Defense : Armed Forces Expeditionary

Vietnam Service Medal (4 awards of >120 days each) : Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal : US Navy Expert Rifleman

The scroll on the RVN Campaign Medal is inscribed "1960 -- " to signify it never really 'ended'.
