Chapter One: A New Look
“Are you guys ready to head up to the new station?” Buck yelled out to Sarah and the kids. Buck was eager to check out the station. This was Earths first space station since the one that they were on all those centuries ago. And even then, this one is so much bigger.
“Just about.” Sarah said as she came out in a new sundress. Buck whistled at her a couple times. “Thank you.” Bringing out a suitcase, Sarah yelled, “Kids, let's go!” They both came running out, heading towards the door.
They walked in the launch bay and joined the crowed of people gathering on the shuttle to head up to the station. This was going to be a big day. It took a few minutes to reach the shuttle and as they inched their way forward, Buck took this opportunity to talk with the kids. “Listen, you two. I need you to be good for mommy and stay by her side, especially in this crowed.”
“You're not coming with us?” Goffrey asked.
“I am, but I have to take Beatrix up there, so I will see you when you arrive. Okay?” They both nodded and as they reached the shuttle, Buck leaned in to Sarah. “I'll see you up there. I love you.” She gave her a quick kiss and left to her starfighter. Buck ran to where Beatrix was and got in, looking at the shuttle. “I hate having them go by themselves, Beatrix.”
“Couldn't Lieutenant Galloway escort them up there?”
“No. He was sent up there a few days ago, to help control the crowds.”
“I'm sure they'll be fine Buck.”
“I know. We better head up there.” The bay was so noisy that no one heard Beatrix fly off. It was a fast trip to the station and when she arrived, Gavin was waiting for her. “Speak of the devil.” Buck said as she gave him a hug. “Beatrix and I were just talking about you.”
“All good I hope.” Gavin said with a laugh.
“Of coarse.”
“Come, this way. The shuttles will arrive at the terminal on the other side of the station.” Gavin lead the way through the crowded halls. “They are considering allowing just the next few shuttles up and then closing it to Earth citizens. They want to make sure that those from other worlds will be able to be here as well. They weren't expecting so many humans interested in being here.” As they walked the halls, dodging people left and right, they ran into the station commander. “Colonel O'Connor,” Gavin said, “walk with us. This is Captain Buck Rogers.”
“So you're the one that everyone is talking about. Aren't you supposed to be heading to the Control Center?”
“A pleasure to meet you Colonel. I'm not due there for a couple hours. We're heading to meet my family.”
“I see. Well, welcome aboard, I look forward to getting to know you a little more.”
“As do I, Sir.”
“I'll see you there.” As he turned to walk away, he quickly said, “Oh and Captain, call me Tim.” He then disappeared into the crowed.
Buck had never seen so many people in one area before and she had been through LAX with her unit. She had never seen so may different species in one area as well. In many ways, it was overwhelming, however, Buck tried not to think about that and focused on getting to Sarah and the kids. As the shuttle landed at the terminal, Buck got excited. Yeah, it had only been a little bit ago that she saw them, but in her mind, this was kind of like a working vacation. This was the first time they had been on a vacation together. As Sarah and the kids stepped of the shuttle, Buck could see a very excited look on both the kids faces. Lisa ran up to Buck, “Ma'ma,” Buck lifted her into her arms. “You missed clowns.” With a smile she said as she looked around,
“Really?” She noticed a couple of clowns leaving the shuttle. “You mean those ones?” She said, pointing to them.
Laughing, Lisa continued. “Yes. They were funny.” Lisa noticed Gavin standing next to them and gave him a smile. “Hi Uncle Gabin.”
Gavin smiled back. “Hi sweetheart.” He said as Sarah and Goffrey walked up.
Buck leaned into Sarah and gave her a kiss. “I'm sure you've heard about the trip.” Sarah said.
“You mean the clowns? Yes we have.”
“Hi Gavin.” Sarah said, giving him a hug.
“Hi Uncle Gavin.” Goffrey joined in,
“Hey Buddy. Well, shall I take you to your room?”
“Yes.” Buck started. “I only have an hour and a half before I have to be to the Control Center.”
“Well, then. This way.” Gavin lead them through the promenade which was crowded. A man ran past them and was being chased by security. Gavin shook his head and continued. “I think this is the most chaotic it's been here.”
Sarah asked, “How many people are here?”
“So far, we have nearly two hundred aboard, and we're expecting roughly fifty more by the end of the day.”
“Wow.”
Buck asked a question this time. “How many can the station hold?”
“It can hold up to three hundred and eighty-five people and normally will house about two hundred and eighty-five, including the crew. There are roughly thirty crew members. With the added crew for the opening, we have about sixty crew up here. Include the local population and the visitors, by the time everyone arrives today, we'll have approximately three hundred and fifty-five people here.”
“I'm glad we don't live up here.” Sarah mentioned.
“Right?” Gavin said. “They offered me the Chief of Security position, but I had to turn them down. Honestly, I'm still recovering from the last time I lived on a space station.” Buck hadn't realized just how traumatizing that experience was for Gavin. Each person dealt with these things in their own way. Buck just hoped that Gavin would be able to recover from it soon. “Here you are.” He said as they approached their quarters. “Wilma is on one side and Doctor Huer is on the other side. They should be arriving in an hour.”
“Huh. Just in time to go straight to work in the Control Center.” Buck commented.
“Right? I need to get back to work. As you saw, it's a bit chaotic. I'll see you in the Control Center. Don't forget. Meeting in seventy-five minutes.”
Buck, Sarah and the kids entered what will be their quarters for the next three days. It was far smaller then the one they lived in on Earth, but for three days, they would survive. It has two bedrooms, a small kitchenette, a living room and a small bathroom. It was a beautiful setup for a station. The kids immediately went into their room to check it out. “Buck,” Sarah began, “I know you're going to be real busy for the next three days. I just want you to know that I'm glad the kids and I are here with you.”
“Me too.” They could both hear laughter coming from the kids room and what sounded like something being repeatedly slammed on. “No jumping on the bed, you two.” Buck yelled with a smile.
From their room they could hear the noise stop and both kids remark, “Awwweeeeee. Fine.!” Buck and Sarah quietly laughed.
Buck had been eating when she noticed the time. Wiping her mouth and dropping the napkin, Buck quickly stood up. “Mmmm, I have to go. I want to stroll though the Promenade real quick before I have to head to the control Center.”
“Alright dear. Have a good night.”
Buck gave her a kiss and headed to the door. “Bye you two.”
“Bye ma'ma.” They both replied.
The Promenade didn't quite seem so busy now. Buck figured that many of the visitors were settling into their quarters. As Buck looked around at the shops and restaurants, a voice came over the loud speaker. “This is your commanding officer, Colonel Tim O'Connor, speaking.” His voice was gentle and, to Buck, sounded like an airplane Captain's announcement. “I would like to welcome everyone aboard Earth Station. As you settle in to you're new life, vacation or what ever the reason you're here, I would like to remind you to be courteous to those around you. We are all in this together. Festivities will begin in two hours and as your hosts mingle among you, please feel free to ask any questions you'd like, as long as it doesn't compromise security. Thank you for joining us in our festivities and have a wonderful night.”
Buck wondered if every day would have an announcement or if this was just for the festivities, regardless, she felt it was a nice announcement. The shops in the Promenade were bigger than Buck thought they would be and they had all types of shops. There were a few that sold clothes, some that sold toys and a couple that sold souvenirs. The others were various shops that sold items from other planets, more likely run by someone from that planet. It was pretty awesome to see. Buck even heard that one of the floors had a park on it. The entire floor simulated an outdoor environment complete with the sounds of birds and a waterfall. Buck felt that she needed to check that out later.
Getting ready to leave, Buck noticed one of the restaurants that had just opened. It looked like something from her time period, which is what caught her attention, so she went inside for a moment to look at the menu and as she looked it over, excitement filled her entire body. She couldn't wait to surprise Sarah with this and introduce the kids to food from their time.
“Shoot.” Buck said aloud.
As most of the officers gathered in the Control Center, Gavin noticed Buck running in, stopping next to him. He leaned in to Buck to speak quietly to her. “Cutting it close.” His smile was very noticeable.
“Kinda reminds you of Basic Training days, huh?” They both started laughing.
As the meeting got started, Doctor Huer spoke, “I know that most of you are here because you were ordered to be here,” several officers laughed, “but I want to say thank you any way, for being here. This is big for us. The last space station the human race built, gave us three very special officers and I have no doubt that Earth Station will produce some very, vary special officers as well. Colonel O'Connor, if you would please.”
“Thank you Doctor Huer.” The Colonel began, his back to the glass window that showed an amazing view of space. “I do want to note that those three fine officers that Doctor Huer mentioned are among us here on Earth Station. To them, I salute. Now to business. The festivities will begin at 0900 hours. We're expecting it to last at least two days and expect some colorful characters to come out. I hear that Colonel Astor is quite fun when he starts drinking.”
Most of the officers started laughing when he said that. Out the group, someone yelled, “I heard the same about you Colonel.”
There was more laughter. Tim replied with, “Not according to my family.” After that, many couldn't hold the laughter in, which didn't last long and was soon replaced with concern as all eyes were no longer on Colonel O'Connor, but focused on the Draconian mother ship that was creeping up to them.
Chapter Two: Look Who's Coming To Diner
“Stations!” O'Connor yelled as the ship came closer. Each officer who worked there took their station as ordered. “Lieutenant Griftin, what's their status?”
“Their shields are down and their weapons are unarmed.” His voice was deep and a little intimidating. “Sir, they are contacting us.”
“Put it on the viewer.”
A woman who looked human appeared on the screen. Her black clothes and the black mask that covered her mouth screamed dangerous. “I am General Ardala of the Draconian Dynasty. I assure you ... Colonel, we come in peace. We are here to congratulate and celebrate with you, on the completion of your station.”
“How do I know that you're not lying to us?” O'Connor asked.
“Colonel, we may be pirates, but we keep our word and I never lie. Permission to come aboard.”
Colonel O'Connor looked at her for a moment. “Permission granted. You may dock at port one. General, due to the amount of people we already have aboard, I ask that you keep your party to a maximum of fifteen.”
Nodding her head to the right, she replied with, “Understood. I look forward to meeting you Colonel. Ardala out.”
The viewer went blank and Colonel O'Connor started walking out. Major Estan, you have the Control Center.” He said to his first in command.
Buck headed out with O'Connor. “I'm coming with you.”
“I was hoping you would. Griftin, with me. Gavin, take over as security in here.” The three officers walked out and as fast as they could, walked over to meet Ardala. Thankfully, the Promenade wasn't as busy and the way to port one was cleared.
General Ardala walked out with only eight of her officers and allowed all but two to roam the station. Ardala stopped at O'Connor. Her hair was straight, long and pure black, she wore a black outfit that covered her from neck to ankle, black boots covered her feet and the mask that covered her mouth was thin and smooth. Black gloves covered her hands. With a curtsy and a slight bow, Ardala said, “I'm pleased to meet you Colonel O'Connor.”
With a slight bow, he replied. “The pleasure is mine. May I introduce my Chief of Security, Lieutenant Griftin and this is Captain Buck Rogers of the Earth Defense Directorate.”
Ardala turned to Captain Rogers, “Ah, Captain Rogers. So you're the one that has been causing trouble for my warriors. Such a tiny thing. You fight with honor Captain and among my people, that deserves respect.”
“Thank you General. I have to admit that some of your warriors have given me a run for my money.” Ardala looked at O'Connor for a translation, who just shrugged his shoulders. “It's a saying where I come from. It means that some of your warriors have been tough.”
“I see. Well, a challenge never hurt anybody. Accept of coarse those who were killed from it.” She waved a hand and turned to O'Connor. “In any case, you'll have to excuse my guards, they do not respond to names and they only respond to me. However, we are here to celebrate.”
“You're welcomed to join us in the Control Center if you'd like.”
“I think I will Colonel. Thank you.” They started walking back to the Control Center, slowly, talking the entire way. Ardala's guards behind Captain Rogers and Lieutenant Griftin behind them. “Tell me Colonel, how long have you been with the Directorate?”
“Earth Station is only affiliated with the Earth Defense Directorate. They supply fighters for us, but we don't answer to them. We are directly set up by the Chancellor of Earth.”
“I see. And how about you Captain Rogers?”
“I've been with the Directorate for about eight months now, I believe.”
“Eight months? You rose in rank quickly.”
“Actually, I was already a Captain when I joined the Directorate.” Buck was reaching her level of information she was willing to give, and had a feeling she would be letting Ardala know that.
“Uh huh. And what did you do before that, Captain?”
“I'm sorry General, but that information is classified.”
“I see. Nothing to be sorry about, Captain.”
As they entered the Control Center, everyone stood at attention as an officer yelled, “General among us!”
“Oh, well.” She turned to O'Connor, “What is it you say to get them to ….. stop.”
O'Connor smiled. “At ease. It is our way of honoring the entrance of a high ranking officer, no matter if they are one of us or another species. You're the highest ranking person here.”
“I see. At ease!” She commanded. Everyone returned to what they were doing. “Colonel O'Connor, I do not wish to over step myself. This is your station and you're the one in charge.”
“Thank you, General.”
“So this is your Control Center? It's bigger than I thought it would be.”
“Indeed it is. If you'll please excuse me General, I need to announce something.”
“Of coarse, Colonel.”
“Attention everyone.” Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked towards the Colonel. “As the festivities go on, I'd like to remind those who do not work here that you are always on duty during the celebration, however, enjoy the celebration with your families. That's all.”
Buck turned to General Ardala, “General, it's a pleasure to finally meet you. I hope you enjoy your stay here and I will catch you later.”
“Like wise, Captain.”
“Gavin, see you after work for diner?”
“I'm assuming at the 21st Century restaurant?” Gavin knew her pretty well.
“You know it.”
As Buck left the room, General Ardala turned to Gavin and asked, “Does she always talk like that?”
“You mean in words and phrases that don't make sense?” Ardala just nodded. “Yep. If you'll excuse me General, I must get back to work.”
As he left, a few other officers as well as Doctor Huer came up to General Ardala to talk.
Just outside the Control Center, as Buck was heading to her quarters, Wilma ran up to her. “Buck.”
“Oh, hey Wilma. What's up?”
“What do you think of our guest?”
“She seems nice, but don't worry, I'm keeping an eye on them.”
“Good.”
“Hey, Why don't you and Doctor Huer join us at the 21st Century restaurant tonight. Gavin will be there. I have a feeling that you will be getting authentic 21st century cuisine.”
“I'll be there and I'm sure Doctor Huer will come as well. Thank you.”
“Awesome. We'll see you there. Oh and I'm going to surprise Sarah with it.”
“Understood.”
Buck sat down on the couch in the front room of their quarters. It wasn't long before Sarah came to cuddle with her. They could hear the kids playing in the room so Buck called them in. They came in and sat down on the floor across from Buck and Sarah. “I have a surprise for the three of you. Tonight, for diner, we're going to go out to eat.”
“Really?” Sarah asked.
“Yes. I found this great restaurant that I think we'll all love. However, I'm not going to tell you what it is, because I want it to be a surprise.”
“Okay. Do we need to dress up?”
“No. Uncle Gavin with be there and I've invited Wilma and Doctor Huer. And I've already made reservations for it.”
“Mysterious. I like it.”
“We'll leave here around five thirty.”
The time went by fast and before they knew it, it was five fifteen. As Buck was reading a book, the door chimed. Looking up for a moment, Buck yelled, “Come in.”
Wilma casually walked in wearing a pair of pants and a blue shirt with a fold over at the top. “Auntie Wilma!!” The kids shouted, running to hug her.
Wilma mouthed, 'Auntie Wilma'? “That's what the kids prefer to call you.”
“I'm okay with that.” Wilma hugged them back and started a small conversation with them. After they left to go back to their room, Wilma walked over to sit next to Buck.
Sarah was just finishing up getting ready and walked into the room, not knowing Wilma was in there. “What do you think?”
Wilma answered her question. “Girl, you are too hot for that dress.” She leaned in to Buck and whispered, “Did I say that right?” Buck just nodded.
“Wilma! Thank you. You're looking amazing too.”
“You look absolutely sexy, sweetheart.” Buck replied to her question.
As they walked up to the restaurant Sarah's eyes widened. She had only hoped that the food was the same. The restaurant was beautiful. As you walked in there was a fish tank with a couple of coy swimming around like it's no ones business. Goffrey ran up to get a closer look at the fish. They didn't wait long before someone came to serve them. “Hi. Reservation for seven, under Rogers.”
The waitress looked to see if she could find them. Locating it, she grabbed five adult menus and two kid menus. “Please follow me.” She led them to a huge round table in the middle of the room. Placing the menus down on the table, the waitress continued. “Your waiter tonight will be Aaron. Once you have decided what you want, just raise your hand and Aaron will come get your order. May I interest any of you in a glass of water?” Wilma shook her head as did Sarah.
“Can I get one for me and one for each of them, please?” Buck mover her finger back and forth between the kids.
“Of coarse. Is there anything else I can do before I get your waters?”
“Yes. We're expecting two gentlemen to come.”
“I'll make sure they get to the table.”
“Thank you very much.”
“You're much welcomed.” The waitress left, leaving them to look at the menu.
“Buck.” Wilma said. “Were all your restaurants like this in your time?”
“Most of them were. Sit down restaurants such as this one were just like this.”
“Interesting. And we order from these menus?” Buck gave her a quick nod. “Fascinating.”
“I think you're hanging around Buck too much, Wilma.” Gavin said as he walked up to the table. “You're beginning to talk like her.” Sarah and Wilma laughed as Gavin took a seat. “Doctor Huer sends his regards. He got stuck in the Control Center. Now, let's see what they have.”
Buck leaned over to Goffrey to help him decide on what to eat. There was so much from the kids menu that Buck remembers ordering in those few times that her and her father would go out to eat. “How about some chicken nuggets?” Buck asked. Goffrey nodded. “I think you'd like root beer. Want to try that?” Again he nodded.
“I honestly don't know what to order. We don't have any of this stuff on menu in the fabricator.” Wilma said as she looked up and down the menu.”
“I think that's the point, Wilma. Let me help you. You like meat, right?” Wilma nodded in response to Gavin's question. “I think you'd like the roasted garlic chicken legs, with mashed potatoes and corn.”
“That sounds delicious. Thank you Gavin.”
“My pleasure Wilma.”
“Are you two ready to order?” Buck asked Wilma and Gavin.
“I think so.” Wilma said.
Buck raised her hand and Aaron came over. Handing Buck and the kids their waters, he asked each of them what they wanted and when he got to Wilma, they realized that they forgot to discuss the drink. “She'll take a root beer. Gavin replied.
As they waited for their order, they talked amongst themselves about the station. They were all very impressed. The design and the quality was, as Buck might put it, most impressive. The food took a little longer than they thought. Usually, fabricated food is real quick. The food finally came and each plate was placed before them. Buck had the same thing as Wilma and after taking a bite, Buck rolled her eyes. “Oh my WOW.” She said. “This chicken might be fabricated, but they really cooked it. I can't believe how much it tastes like the real thing.”
Wilma took a bite of her chicken, not sure what to expect. “This is amazing. All your food was like this?”
“And some of it taste better.” Gavin replied to her.
Sarah and Buck were tending to the kids while they ate when Aaron stopped by. “Is everything to your liking?” He asked.
“Aaron, I would like to speak to the chef if I may.”
“Of coarse Captain Rogers.”
“You know who I am?”
“Every employee does. You, Lieutenant Rogers and Lieutenant Galloway. I'll go get Chef Fránk.”
It didn't take long for the Chef to come out and it seemed as if everyone in the restaurant had their eyes on them. “Good evening Captain Rogers. How may I help you?”
“Chef Fránk, I have to say that this meal is excellent. It tastes like the real thing. Did you cook it yourself?”
“Yes Ma'am and thank you. The recipes have been in my family and passed down for twenty generations. My ancestors owned and operated a restaurant in Chicago.”
“Was it by chance called Fránko's?”
“It was.”
“I used to frequent that restaurant. Your food is just as amazing. You do your ancestors proud.”
“Thank you so much Captain Rogers.” He bowed his head slightly and went back into the kitchen.
As he left, Buck heard a familiar voice. “Captain Rogers. I didn't think I'd be seeing you so soon.”
Buck looked up and noticed General Ardala and her two guards. “General Ardala. Would you like to have a seat? Doctor Huer wasn't able to make it.”
Ardala sat in the chair offered, her two guards stood behind her. “I'm afraid that's my fault. My superior insisted on speaking with him. Thank you Captain Rogers.”
“General Ardala, This is my wife, Sarah and our children, Goffrey and Lisa. Sarah, this is General Ardala of the Draconian Dynasty.”
“It's nice to meet you.” Sarah said.
“The pleasure is mine. To meet the spouse of a great warrior like Captain Rogers is a great honor.”
“General, I have a question for you and I mean no disrespect. You speak of honor a lot, but I'm curious, where's the honor in attacking unarmed ships or destroying innocent civilians?”
Wilma started choking on the corn in her mouth when Buck asked that. She took a drink of her root beer and once she regained herself, she sharply said. “Buck!”
“No Colonel. “Ardala began. “She has asked me a valid question. Captain Rogers, I'll answer that question, just promise me you'll keep an open mind when I do. Honor is a matter of perspective. For example, in your own history, twenty centuries ago it was considered honorable for a man to protect a woman no mater what. Then, in your 21st century, the women decided that they could fend for themselves and got upset if a man defended them. That honor changed because the perspective of it changed. My people consider honor to be one of the highest forms of respect. There is much that goes into honor with the Draconians, however, we are nomads. We don't have a planet of our own, nor do we have a culture of our own. Most Draconians are people who have been rejected by their species, for one reason or other. I myself am Argunon, and when I refused to get married at the age of twelve, I was shunned and cast off my planet. I was starving and on the streets of Eden when a Draconian leader took pity on me and brought me into his fold. We're just trying to survive.”
“I can understand and am remorseful of your peoples situation. However, you and your people have shown us nothing but honor while here. That is something to recognize. Regardless of why you do what you do, you have my respect, General.”
“Thank you Captain Rogers. I better be getting back to my ship, it's feeding time. Will you be at the festivities tomorrow?”
“We will.”
“Then I shall see you there.” Ardala stood, getting ready to leave. “Sarah, it was a pleasure to meet you. Colonel Deering, Lieutenant Galloway, children.” Ardala turned and walked away.
Chapter Three: Rage
In the Promenade people of all races celebrated the new station. Balloons were everywhere and people conversed and laughed. Music played over the loud speaker throughout the station. Buck talked with Sarah and laughed with the kids. Everyone was having a great time, until the station shook. The emergency alert klaxon sounded with a red light flashing everywhere and over the loud speaker, the music was replaced with, “All fighter pilots to your fighters. Repeat, ALL fighter pilots to your fighters.”
Buck gave each of them a kiss and ran off. The station shook again and the air became stale. Suddenly, no one was in the mood to celebrate anymore. Sarah ran to a window with the kids to see if she could what's going on. A nasty looking ship was headed directly for them, firing upon the station. As all of the fighter pilots scrambled to their starfighters, General Ardala rushed to her ship. Once aboard, they detached from from the station and began backing out. As they backed away, the Earth starfighters came into formation. The Draconian flag ship faced the new attacker and immediately their starfighters launched.
The Inick ship that was docked at port two also detached and launched fighters. By this time, there were nearly a hundred fighters heading to the new attackers, all in formation, with the Earth starfighters in the front of the formation. General Ardala got on the comm. “Attention Draconian armada Captain Rogers is in charge of this fight, you will all listen to her. We are in their space.”
The leader of the Inick got on and gave the same order to his fleet. “It's all you Buck.” Wilma confirmed.
'Talk about pressure.' She thought. “Inick fleet, attack the back of the ship. If they can't move, they can't escape. The Draconians and the Directorate will attack the front. Watch for enemy fighters.” As they got into position, the enemy ship released fighters of their own. “Wilma, take Delta and Echo squadrons and head back to protect the station. Here we go everyone.” Then under her breath, she said, “It's show time.”
Fighters flew everywhere as weapons lit up the area of battle. It was almost like seeing fireworks going off on the Fourth of July. From the station windows, it looked intense. They could see flash of lights from the destruction of starfighters and each person prayed that it wasn't someone they knew or someone that is fighting for them. Sarah didn't look worried and the kids were too young to understand the Buck was out there, fighting for them.
As Buck flew around firing on the enemy, destroying one after another, she noticed an enemy fighter on the tail of a Draconian. She moved fast to help the Draconian fighter, firing upon the enemy fighter. The pilot was good, but not good enough. As she chased it, she noticed the fighter it was after was General Ardala. After several attempts, Buck was able to destroy it. “Thank you Captain Rogers.”
“Come now General, I think this means that we can now call each other by our first names. Please call me Buck.”
“And you may call me Jordon.”
Buck watched out her window staring at the firefight for just a moment. It looked like something out of a movie or a book. “Who are these people?” Buck asked.
“They call themselves The Rage. We've dealt with them before.”
As soon as she spoke the name, Buck remembered what Leer had told her. “One million, five hundred years ago, a species who call themselves The Rage attacked our planet. They took resources, destroyed much of our planets surface and killed many of my people.” “I can't believe I'm saying this, but we can't leave them alive. We need to destroy that ship.”
“I'm not sure if we can Buck.”
“Jordon, would you say that with the fire power of your ship, the Inick ship and the station, along with fighters, we would be able to destroy that ship?”
“I think so. I'll tell my ship to start firing on them.”
Buck did the same with the station. “Trust me Colonel, we must destroy that ship.” She then turned her attention to the starfighters. “All available fighters, fire upon that ship any way you can. Careful not to get in the way of the ships firing upon it.” Buck looked at General Ardala from her window, who was looking at her. “Shall we get rid of The Rage?”
“After you Buck.”
Buck went in firing repeatedly at the ship with General Ardala right behind her. Small parts of the ship began to blow. Fires broke out and as more and more fires emerged, Buck realized that the ship was about to blow up. “All fighters, get away from The Rage ship, it's about to blow.”
As the starfighters sped away from The Rage ship, parts of it began exploding, one by one until the entire ship had exploded. Cheers and claps sounded like a clasp of thunder through out Earth Station.
Out in the battle field, each of the Rage fighters came to an instant stop, in mid fight just hanging there as if they didn't know what to do. “Everyone, hold your fire.” Buck tried to get a closer look at one of their fighters but wasn't close enough. “Beatrix, can you get me right under their cockpit, so I can see inside of it?”
“How close would you like to get, Buck?”
“As close as you can.”
From the station window, Sarah could see a fighter inching it's way to one of the enemy fighters. She knew it was Buck. “Be careful Buck.” She whispered.
Beatrix managed to get Buck so close to the enemy fighter that if she didn't have a window, she would be able to touch it. She looked all around inside the fighter trying to see if there was anything out of the ordinary. She could see the pilot, but it looked like it was either dead or out of commission somehow. “Beatrix, analyze the inside of this fighter.” she asked as both continued to slowly rotate.
“I don't detect any life forms in the cockpit. And all machinery are off.”
“Patch me through to Doctor Huer.”
“Buck, What's going on?”
“Doctor Huer, As soon as The Rage ship was destroyed, all their fighters went dead and offline.” Still looking into the other cockpit, she continues, “It appears that they are mechanical. Requesting permission to have one of the fighters brought to the lab for study.”
“As long as you feel it's safe, Buck.”
“Thank you Doctor Huer. Rogers out. Major Daniels.”
“Yes Buck.”
“I need you to tractor this fighter back to Earth. Take it to the lab for study.”
“Right away, Buck.”
“Jordon, did you want to tractor one onto your ship for study?”
“As tempting as that is, Buck, I think I'll just get the information from you.”
Whispering to herself, Buck said, “Smart.” Then aloud, “Alright then. Once Major Daniels is clear, everyone fire on one of these starfighters. Let's destroy these ones for good.”
The view from the window was spectacular. The beauty of each ship being destroyed seem to enhance the celebration for everyone in the station. It wasn't long before O'Connor came over the loud speaker. “Emergency alert has been canceled and all fighters are returning to Earth Station.”
As Sarah watched out the window, she felt a hand on her shoulder. Turning around she saw Gavin there. “I'll watch the kids, you go to her.” Sarah mouthed thank you and ran out to the bay that Beatrix was in earlier.
She watched fighter after fighter come back and land, but none of them was Buck. The more that others come and landed, the more worried, Sarah got. There was only room for two more fighters and it didn't sound like any others were coming in. Sarah dropped her head when she heard the sound of another starfighter entering the bay. As the starfighter came into view, Sarah got excited. A tear rolled down her face as Buck walked up to her. Sarah didn't even wait for Buck to stop. She grabbed her, pulled her close to her and gave her a passionate kiss. When their lips parted, and with tears rolling down her face, Sarah whispered, “Thank you.”
“For what?”
“Thank you for coming home to us.”
Buck held Sarah's head to her chest and rubbed her hair. “Sarah, you and the kids are the reason I am able to stay alive out there. I will always come home to you.”
In the Promenade, the celebration continued. Music was back on the loud speaker and everyone continued to have fun. As Buck and Sarah found Gavin and the kids, Gavin gave Buck a hug. “You're wanted in the Control Center. Sarah and the kids are welcomed to come.” As the five of them walked away, they were dancing a little to the music. When they reached the the Control Center and Buck walked in, everyone there began clapping. The applause lasted a short while, the entire time a confused expression was painted across Buck's face.
When the applause settled down, Colonel O'Connor spoke. “Captain Buck Rogers, your actions today and the leadership for which you displayed in the battlefield, saved a lot of lives. Your cunning plans that was expertly executed, won the battle. You have turned enemies into friends. Because of this, and with the Directorate's permission, I award you the medal of honor and promote you to the rank of Colonel. Congratulations, Colonel Rogers.” Everyone again began clapping again. “However!” He said loud, to get over the sound of the applause. “However, Colonel Rogers, I still out rank you.” Laughter filled the air as they each took turns congratulating her.
Wilma gave Buck a long hug. “I'm so excited for you.”
“Thank you Wilma.”
As Wilma walked away, Sarah stood in front of Buck. “I'm so proud of you, Buck. So proud of you.” Sarah gave her a hug.
When Sarah was finished hugging Buck, Doctor Huer walked up. “Congratulations Buck. You deserve every bit of it. Can we see you over here for a moment?”
“Of coarse Doctor Huer. What's up.” They walked over to a desk where Colonel O'Connor, and General Ardala were, a pad positioned on the desk. “What's going on?”
“Colonel Rogers,” General Ardala began, “I have spoken with my superiors and they agreed to have me negotiate terms with the Earth Defense Directorate.”
“Terms for what?”
“A treaty. The Draconian Dynasty will not take any action against any Earth Defense Directorate starfighter, shuttle or cruiser and if any Draconian fighters are warned to back off, they will do so. Furthermore, the Draconian Dynasty will not take any action on any ship with in the confines of your solar system. Your solar system will be a safe haven for all ships, including the Draconian Dynasty. The Draconian Dynasty will aid the Earth Defense Directorate in any conflict when asked, especially if that conflict takes part in your own solar system. The Earth Defense Directorate will aid the Draconian Dynasty in conflicts that do not conflict with their morals or personal beliefs.”
“That sounds great. I can't think of anything else that needs to be discussed with it. Thank you.”
General Ardala looked a Buck. “All we need is a signature of a Colonel or higher.” It didn't take Buck long to realize that she was the Colonel they wanted to sign it.
“I'm honored. Thank you.” Buck put her signature to the document which made it official. General Ardala stood up and gave her a little curtsy with a slight bow. Buck returned the honor and mingled for the next hour. Conversations resumed and laughter could be heard in the Control Center. On duty officers were a little more relaxed than normal, but kept an eye on everything to make sure that all functioned properly. The day was celebrated for many reasons, all of which one person or another would remember for a long time.
Chapter Four: Life Goes On
The station was settling down and although one could not say that it was going back to normal, as they do not know what normal looks like, one could assume that this is what normal will look like for the station. The last three days was filled with joy, excitement, horror, satisfaction, and relief. It was a lot to take in for anyone. The Promenade was quiet, probably because of how late it was. Everyone was settling into their quarters and the shops on the Promenade were closing down. There was one food store that stayed open twenty four hours for those who worked the night shift, but other than that, they all closed down around eight.
Wilma had been off work for a couple of hours when she was called to Bucks and Sarah's quarters. “Wilma, I know it's late, but we were wondering if you could do us a huge favor? The kids are asleep and we were wondering if you'd be willing to stay here for a couple hours. We wanted to go check out the park.”
“How can Auntie Wilma say no?” Through her exhaust, she gave them a big smile.
“Thank-you so much. We owe you one.”
“Don't worry about it. Have fun.”
Buck and Sarah walked through the Promenade hand in hand. They decided to take it slow since they really haven't had a night together alone. They figured that happens when you become parents and they weren't complaining about it at all. As they took the lift down to the park, Buck brought up some interesting information about the station. “Did you know that when this lift gets close to the park, it slows down and then flips so that the park then becomes the top and not the bottom?”
“Really?”
“And we won't even know that it flipped.” The doors opened to a beautiful large park that reminded Buck of Central Park in Manhattan. The lift was in the middle of the park, but hidden inside a large tree. Trees were placed in perfect spots to make the park look just right. A path weaved throughout the park that led to different beautiful areas. In one area was a gorgeous waterfall that led into a stream that weaved through the park as well. If they were to be here during the day, they would be able to hear birds chirping, a sound that came out of the speakers, however, since they were there at night, a light shown resembling the moon. It was dark in the park and street lamps were lit in specifically designed places to give the park the perfect lighting. The windows above them were clear allowing them to see the stars and the Earth below, while during the day the windows show the blue sky with clouds here and there. Buck looked around, Sarah's hand in hers. “It's a beautiful night.”
“It is. We need to go on dates more often. It's nice being alone with you.”
“I agree. We'll have to ask Auntie and Uncle if they could watch them more often.”
“Yes.” Sarah paused for a moment, looking at the stars. “Buck, please know that when you are out there, I know you will come home to us, my heart tells me that, however, I do worry. Today, I don't think I've ever been so worried.”
“I know sweetheart. I'm sorry you get worried. I wish I could take that away.”
“It will never go away darling, but you need to do what you do. You were amazing out there today. And I know you will always come home to us.”
Buck wasn't sure exactly what to say to that. She sat there staring at Sarah, wondering how she got to be so lucky. “You look amazing tonight and I love you so much.” They spent the next hour talking and making out. When they arrived back at their quarters, they saw Wilma asleep on the couch. Buck gently shook Wilma. “Wilma. We're back.” She whispered. Gently shaking her again, “Wilma.” Wilma slowly moved, almost as if she was waking up, however, that wasn't the case as she continued to sleep. “We'll just leave her there.” Buck walked in the room, got changed and crawled into bed, cuddling with Sarah.
