I have broken a few in my time
some were the ramblings of a fool
made in a moment of impulse
forgotten as soon as they left my lips
Many were made with the best intent
meant word for word when uttered
my heart and soul were sincere
but life had other plans.
Should I cry at night over promises
if I tried but came up short?
I gave it my all does that matter?
Does that show that I cared?
I have learned the peril of promises
both made and those received
people change and so does the world
can anyone be truly accountable?

Welcome back, Mr Cleary. It's great to read you once more. A reflective poem, which interestingly twists from the first person introspection and seems to question the accountability, not just of the individual but of the wider world/population and how our interactions impact upon one another.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I have taken a long hiatus from writing anything and I can tell that there's plenty of rust to shake off. Your comments are as always eloquent and helpful.
