Evoking the long vanished world of the 19th century Jewish schtetl, Yasha is talented, popular and a widely read free thinker who has largely abandoned the ancient faith of his ancestors. He is divided between his ambition, his vanity as to his own talents and his obligations to those he cares for. A tragedy, partially resulting from his own actions, leads him back to his faith but in a way that will seem extreme, even bizarre, to most modern readers.

The Polish born author wrote all of his books in Yiddish and was awarded the 1978 Nobel Prize in Literature.
