JUNE 1997

PART 2

FASHION & BEAUTY

YOUR STYLE

Every month in 1997, TEEN MAGAZINE picked one item of clothing and showcased several ways you could wear said item.  But for June 1997, the pick wasn't one clothing item, but one clothing trend.  And that trend was STRIPES.  After all, the '90s just weren't the nineties without stripes.

- Chest Stripes

- Racing Stripes ( aka Adidas stripes)

- Skinny or Thick Horizontal Stripes

- Multicolor Stripes

- Diagonal Stripes

While stripes could look sporty, they also could look retro or even fancy depending on the style, the color and how you paired them.  As examples we saw a pale blue tank dress with chest stripes in orange, white, yellow and red.  Add a pair of neutral Dr. Scholl's sandals and done!  Sporty!  Or wear a teal colored halter with white diagonal stripes and add a black A line skirt and white slide platforms and you got a retro chic look going.

YOUR LOOKS

What was the latest trends in makeup and beauty?

- CHARMS!

Yeah, but as decor on bath gels and nail polishes.  Silver colored butterflies, hearts and other cutesy stuff.  But they were so cute that you wouldn't dare throw the empty bottles away when you finished them.

- EYE CANDY

Or candy colored eyeshadows in fours, packaged in glam silver colored snap cases.  Manufactured by Hard Candy, these were sold at Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom.

- CLUELESS LINE

No, this wasn't a phone line for the clueless of mind.  It referred to a makeup line inspired by the film and short lived tv show Clueless.  Best of all?  Teens didn't have to spend like a gazillion bucks on these beauty products.  As if!

FASHION SLANT

This was a four page fashion layout showcasing some of mid-1997's hottest trends.

- Colored Sunglasses ( where the lenses are colored, such as purple or orange)

- Fabrics like terry clotth and corduroy

- Gold style Shirts

- Sport Inspired Shirts

- Bell Bottoms

- Bucket Hats and Floppy Hats

STREET SCENE

A quick look at what people were wearing in 1997 ASR SHOW ( Action Sports Retailer) in Long Beach, California.

- Tie Dye Stuff ( from a racer back summer dress to a sports bra)

- Camoflauge Print ( in blue here)

- Bucket Hats ( againnnn?)

- Backpacks with Stripes or Piping

DENIM- ANYTHING BUT BORING

A six page fashion layout featuring the funkiest denim ideas for 1997.  Why?  Because in the '90s denim was the fabric of choice.  And by mid 1997 we began to see embellished denim in the form of jeans, shirts, even purses.  Here they focused more on pants.  But what did we see?

- Bell bottoms with fun floral "taping" on the hem

- Deep indigo denim jeans

- Patchwork denim?

- Strioed Denim Pants

And how to wear these pants?  Here they paired the indigo jeans with bright yellow tops.  They paired the bell bottoms with simple tanks ( or how about a crochet one?).  And don't forget the platform slide sandals.  A late '90s must.

SLOPE ASYLUM

Here they showcased the hottest in shoes

SHOES!

- Platform Sandals and Slides

- "Shower" platform Sandals ( made out of colorful plastic)

- Two Tone Oxfords ( because of the retro vibe)

- Cyber Sneakers ( colorful and futuristic)

- Bright Shades

- Flowers on your feet ( or sandals)

ADS

CABOODLES AD

Woah a Caboodles ad in 1997?  Although they were less common by now, magazines still carried a few Caboodle ads here and there by 1997.  This one showed a woman wearing what appeared to be a dark navy plastic jacket, a green top and blue plastic pants.  She held a paintbrush and appears to have painted a giant three colored "C" on a glass panel in front of her.  The ad read: "CABOODLES LIQUID METALLICS- MAKE YOUR MARK!"

We also see several different styles of Caboodles in metallic colors.  Then at the bottom they let buyers know the fun cosmic colors available- Oil Slick, Volcanic Violet, Radiation Raspberry, Cosmic Copper, Acid Blue, Galactic Black, Cyber Silver, Lunar Lime and Aqua Meteor.

LIP LIX AD

These were fab tasting chapsticks with names like "Can't Elope", "Gotta Date", "Boyz-N-Berry" and "Milkshake It".  But in June 1997 TEEN readers had the chance to enter a contest to win a fab prize.  Remember the 1997 film "WILD AMERICA"?   Well this contest was connected to the film, which starred Devon Sawa, Scott Bairstow and Jonathan Taylor Thomas.   The grand prize winner would win a trip to LA, have lunch with one or more of these stars, tour the WB Studios and meet with TEEN editors.

MILK AD

This time the honors went to actor Matthew Fox of "Party of Five" fame.

REVLON AD

This ad was for Revlon's "Street Wear" makeup line.  It was edgy colored makeup that made a bold statement.  Think dark green, deep blue and wine shades in lipsticks, eyeshadows and nail polish.  The colors had names like STAIN ( a wine red), DRAB ( a forest green) and SCHMUTZ ( a coppery brown),

SEARS MAINFRAME AD

This one showed a gal wearing a tie dye crop top and too short white shorts and black sandals.  She was sorta lounging / half falling off a yellow Jeep.  The ad read: " Looking good for summer took a zillion crunches, a billion leg lifts and one cute little pair of shorts.  Gotta Have the Clothes."

TOWNLEY GLITTER AD

Did everyone know that body glitter was all the rage in 1997?  I'm not kidding- if you were a girl and aged between twelve and eighteen, you'd be very excited to buy the latest glitter for your hair, lids, and body in general.  Anyway this ad was for a brand called Townley.  They were holding a contest called "Townley Glitter Gal",  Contestants had to write down their idea for a new Townley glitter product.  The grand prize winner would appear in a future issue of TEEN and get $1000!
