Identity Crisis
By: Chisimdi Christiana
America refuses to be American
Refuses to live up to the ideal
Of the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave
Constantly lowering the bar to return to the Home of the Slave
America refuses to be American
Marching to make herself great again
For a time when she was built on the labor of my people and the stolen land filled with the blood of the Indigenous people
America refuses to be American
Testing the bounds of her Democracy until she reaches the edge of having no more, no morals
American refuses to be American
As what she really wants is for her people to think they are free
instead of thinking freely
America refuses to be American
Because she wants your poor, your tired, and your weary
So she can take advantage of them-covering their eyes with magafolds so they can't see clearly
America refuses to be American
As she stands up like a hypocrite preacher in the pulpit
Professing her love for God all the while hating the People God created
But wait……maybe she isn’t refusing to be American
Maybe she is just being the lie that always was America
