Kermit the Frog once famously sang "It's not easy being green." With all due respect to him and to Jim Henson, I have to disagree. Converting to a sustainable lifestyle has not only been easy, it has saved me considerable money on paper towels and napkins, disposable plastic bags, gasoline, electricity and hot water. Here are many ways that you also as consumers can help our environment. Working together we CAN make a difference! Feel free to share this information in any way.

The escalating problems:

  1. Plastic pollution of our oceans and waterways spreading to our food supply chain
  2. Extinction rates exceed 10k species per year
  3. Global warming has self-accelerating factors

What we can do - Ways to Go Green:

  • Bring cloth bags to the supermarket
  • Eat less red meat products; eat less in general if medically advisable
  • Use cloth napkins
  • Purchase bamboo fiber paper products (they work quite well!)
  • Replace Keurig coffee with large size instant (Uses one plastic lid per 100 cups instead of one plastic cup per one cup of coffee)
  • Reduce road trips
  • Vacation locally, purchase locally grown food items
  • Buy only native plants for your garden (supports local species of life)
  • Use Tupperware or equivalent instead of plastic bags for food storage
  • Reuse plastic take home containers from restaurants
  • Decline straws when ordering out
  • Send e-cards not paper
  • Join local and national conservation groups (there are tons out there)
  • Buy in bulk when possible (uses less plastic)
  • Eat leftovers and save on groceries
  • Reduce junk mail - Remove your name from unwanted mailing lists
  • Drive slower – save fuel
  • Shower more quickly, use less hot water
  • Use a travel mug for coffee; use less paper and plastic
  • Obtain and use a credit card that supports a green organization
  • Use a green search engine
  • Launder clothes less frequently when not really dirty
  • Choose energy efficient appliances only
  • Choose well insulated doors and windows

Together we can make a difference!
