LOVE AND HATE IN THE TIME OF DESPERATION
By A. Garcia-Wiltse
Desperate times expose emotions, sentiments and reactions that propel passions of the heart to overwhelm the rationality of logic, of reason, of prudence. It is when extremes define the boundaries of a moment -- with no bridges to connect, no links to bind, no empathies to thread through the eye of the proverbial needle of lust, of rage, of fury.
Love and hate in the time of desperation – that time, that place, that moment -- that commands and demands the last resort of fear, despair, anguish or distraction. And when love of hate consumes the unsettled mind, the serenity and tranquility of life and of living surrenders to the brutality and cruelty that love of power and supremacy inflicts and exacts upon the desperate and dependent.
Love and hate – indistinguishable in ability to captivate and cultivate -- the heart, the mind, the very soul of those without the strength or will to confront the clarity of their convictions. For love and hate distort the jagged edges of broken hearts, and of ravished and contaminated minds.
And it is in that moment of reflection – between compassion and exhaustion – that the venom of desperation devours the singularity of being and of living, for the plurality of lust, and unjust prejudice and arrogance. And love and hate in the time of desperation – thriving in feral fields of dreams and aspirations – contrived and conceived by hearts and minds that cannot feel or see beyond the lies – beyond the sentimental notions – beyond the promises and assurances.
Love and hate in the time of desperation – our time – this time. When time has dissolved into desperate spheres of tribal chaos and confusion. The minutes, the hours, the days – hostages to the unpredictability and volatility of extremism and fanaticism.
The world erupting. Politics exploding. Society devolving and dissolving. Faith and religion decaying and crumbling. Desperation consuming, exhausting. And love and hate, melding into one state of acceptance, of normality – love of war – of disruption – of corruption.
