Letters Episode 9: “Between the Lines”

(Narration)
"I hate overthinking. It’s like my brain’s a broken record, replaying the same thoughts until they stop making sense. And ever since Ayane came back, it’s only gotten worse. One minute, I tell myself none of this matters. The next, I’m standing outside a café like an idiot, debating whether I should walk in."

(Rukasu stands across the street from the same café where he met Ayane last time. Hands shoved deep into his pockets, he glares at the entrance like it personally offended him.)

(The reason? Ayane had sent him another letter. This time, she didn’t say much—just a time, a place, and one sentence that read: “There’s more I need to say.”)

(He should’ve thrown it away. He should’ve ignored it. Instead, he’s here, wasting his precious free time debating whether to go inside or pretend he never saw it.)

(Before he can decide, someone speaks behind him.)

Ayane: softly You actually came.

(Rukasu stiffens. He turns his head slightly to find Ayane standing there, hands clasped in front of her, that same unreadable expression on her face.)

Rukasu: grumbling Didn’t say I was staying.

Ayane: small smile …Fair enough.

(A pause. The air between them is tense, filled with words neither of them knows how to say yet.)

Ayane: gently Will you come inside?

(Rukasu exhales sharply, rubbing the back of his neck. His instinct is to refuse, to turn and walk away. But his feet stay planted.)

(He doesn’t know what he wants from this conversation. But for some reason, he follows her inside anyway.)

(They sit in a corner booth. The café is quieter than last time, only a few other customers scattered around. Rukasu fidgets with a sugar packet while Ayane watches him, hesitant.)

Ayane: I know this is… a lot. And I know I don’t deserve for you to just—accept this right away.

Rukasu: flatly You think?

Ayane: soft chuckle Yeah, I do.

(She exhales, gripping her cup tightly.)

Ayane: I guess… I just want you to know that leaving wasn’t easy for me. I thought it was the right thing to do, but—pauses—I regretted it every day.

(Rukasu scoffs, but there’s no real bite in it.)

Rukasu: You sure didn’t act like it.

Ayane: quietly I know.

(Another pause. Rukasu taps his fingers against the table, his jaw tight.)

Rukasu: muttering So why now?

Ayane: softly Because I stopped running.

(Rukasu looks up at her, and for the first time, he sees something raw in her eyes—something real. And that’s what unsettles him the most.)

Ayane: I know I can’t change what happened. And I know I don’t have the right to ask you for anything. But… I don’t want to leave things unfinished between us.

(Rukasu doesn’t respond right away. His thoughts are tangled, messy, contradicting themselves at every turn. But somewhere, in the back of his mind, Yuki’s letter lingers.)

(Maybe this isn’t about fixing the past. Maybe it’s just about seeing where things go from here.)

Rukasu: sighing …We’ll see.

(Ayane doesn’t push for more. Instead, she smiles—small, uncertain, but genuine.)

Ayane: Yeah. We will.
